![]() Maybe not that much different if you're looking for a pair of 542s and a good 500 series case, but at $3,000+ it's pricey. I'd love an Anamod ATS-1, loaded with different models, as that does more to emulate actual tape (including hiss and warble, if you so desire) and emulates the behavior of many famous decks, but the price on that is a bit spendy. If anything, I think they'd be a good compliment to the Neve as it would bring a different flavor into the mix for tape saturation. They do 7.5/15/30ips and have a lot of the same features of the 542. Seeing the STS, and the new TS500 from Sound Skulptor, I'm seriously tempted to build a couple of those and give them a try. I think the 15ips setting is probably the most useful, but it's nice to have the options of the different simulated tape speeds. I've wanted a 5042 for a while mostly because it also has the 7.5ips setting (though lacks the 542s 30ips, so it's really a trade off). They're brilliant at bringing life to VSTs, and you can do some amazing things with drums, especially, at 15ips. It sounds fantastic, I have a pair of 542s and they can do anything from subtle, is this even on, type of sonic glue to completely destroying and soft-clipping a signal. It doesn't emulate tape as much as it creates the same level of tape saturation via a tape head.
